My concern is with what Susan Sontag (2003) called, in her last book on the photography of atrocity, " regarding the pain of others," and with the political and ethical ramifications of these acts of seeing. The contemporary prominence of AR films is part of the growing popularity of social justice and activist documentaries in the last fifteen years. Undercover footage is an important tool of animal advocacy but has recently come under attack in the US and elsewhere by so-called 'ag gag' laws like the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. This chapter focuses on a number of traditional and new media formats promoting awareness of animal issues: films produced by animal welfare organizations, including footage shot undercover by animal activists, and feature-length animal rights (AR) documentaries.
